Interview with Coach Bill Smith interviewed by Chris Conybeare recorded in May 1984. Bill Smith was a competitive Olympic swimmer who trained with Coach Sakamoto infamous for coaching the Three-Year Swim Club. Topics include growing up around Waikīkī and the War Memorial Natatorium swimming pool, becoming a competitive swimmer, moving to Maui to train with Coach Sakamoto, swimming in the 1940 nationals, Keo Nakama and his brother Bunmei "Bunny" Nakama, his life on Maui outside of training, Coach Sakamoto's different skills and talents, Coach Sakamoto coaching boy and girl swimmers, traveling to San Francisco on a Matson ship, and training in the sugar irrigation ditch.
