Picture Brides production materials

This subcollection contains production materials including raw unedited interviews from the documentary Picture Brides. Nine years before the popular movie by the same name, Rice & Roses documented this story of the way Japanese, Korean and Okinawan plantation workers in Hawaiʻi arranged marriages with women back in their homelands whom they had never met. University of Hawaiʻi's Alice Chai and Barbara Kawakami, explore the courage, wisdom and humor with which these women faced their arranged marriages and the way they established new lives in Hawaiʻi. Interviews are conducted in English and Japanese.
