Picture Brides

CLEAR presents Picture Brides produced in 1986 for the Rice & Roses series; produced and written by Chris Conybeare and directed and edited by Joy Chong. Nine years before the popular movie by the same name, Rice & Roses documented this story of the way Japanese, Korean and Okinawan plantation workers in Hawaiʻi arranged marriages with women back in their homelands whom they had never met. University of Hawaiʻi's Alice Chai and Barbara Kawakami, explore the courage, wisdom and humor with which these women faced their arranged marriages and the way they established new lives in Hawaiʻi. Interviews are conducted in English and Japanese.
