CLEAR presents Hole Hole Bushi: Songs of the Cane Field produced in 1984 for the Rice & Roses series; produced by Chris Conybeare in association with Franklin Odo and Harry Urata; written by Chris Conybeare; and directed and edited by Joy Chong. Hole Hole Bushi: Songs of the Cane Field is the story of the Japanese sugar plantation laborers who came to Hawaiʻi in the late 1800s who hoped to gain wealth through their labor and return to Japan. Franklin Odo and Harry Urata interview old-timers who share their songs and histories. Special guest ʻukulele artist Ohta San performs modern renditions of this unique Hawaiʻi folk art form.
