Dennis Kamakahi performs "Hula o Makee" at ʻAnini Beach 4/22/94
This video includes several takes of Dennis Kamakahi sitting near the ocean singing "Hula o Makee" recorded on April 22, 1994 at ʻAnini Beach on Kauaʻi for the documentary "The History of the Sons of Hawaiʻi." "Hula o Makee" is a mele (song) written by William S. Ellis about the Makee, a ship sailing to Kauaʻi which got stuck on the reef at Kapaʻa, Kauaʻi and found by another ship, the Malulani. Makee is kaona for a woman who deserted her lover, the Malulani then searches for her.
