Interview with Charlie Fern [Charles Fern], former editor of the Garden Island newspaper, recorded on November 4, 1975 conducted by Bob Barker at the Hawaiʻi Public Television studio for the program Pau Hana Years. In celebration of the 50th anniversary of the first transpacific flight from San Francisco to Hawaiʻi, Fern talks about the news of U.S. Naval Commander John Rodgers and his pilot, Lieutenant Byron J. Connell, and the PN-9 No.1 plane that they flew across the Pacific Ocean. With photo stills, newspaper headlines, and Pathé newsreels, Fern reports the story of the crew's challenges and reception in Honolulu.
