Hawaiian Legacy Foundation: Eddie & Myrna Kamae

Interview with Eddie Thomas and b-roll footage of Waipiʻo Valley 7/8/87

B-roll footage and interview with Eddie Thomas recorded at Waipiʻo Valley on July 8, 1987 for the documentary "Liʻa: The Legacy of a Hawaiian Man." The video begins with an interview with Thomas in front of a staircase foundation of what used to be his grandfather Sam Liʻa Kalainaina's house. Thomas talks about his childhood days when everyone in the neighborhood would come to Kalainaina's house to drink ʻōkolehao (liquor distilled from ti root in a still of the same name meaning "iron bottom") and have a good time. B-roll footage of scenic shots of Waipiʻo Valley includes Hiʻilawe and Hakalaoa Falls; loʻi kalo (taro patches); the mountain ridge; flowering plants such as white ginger and bird of paradise; and fruit trees including niu (coconut) and hēʻī (papaya).
