Interview with Kumu Hula Hoakalei Kamauʻu conducted by Martha Noyes for Legacy of Light. Kamauʻu talks about her aunt, Kumu Hula ʻIolani Luahine training her to chant, and the family studio in Kakaʻako where Luahine was taught by her great aunt, Kumu Hula Keahi Luahine and Mary Kawena Pukui. Kamauʻu also discusses ʻIolani Luahine's service at Huliheʻe Palace and the Royal Mausoleum, the hula pageants for Aloha Week, their performance at the American Folk Festival, her comic dancing, and her gift of passing her knowledge of ancient hula to the next generation. Luahine's great nephew, Poni Kamauʻu, recalls his role as the flag bearer in the hoʻokupu ceremony at the Royal Mausoleum, and the confidence and cultural values that his aunt instilled in him.
