Makaliʻi returns to Kawaihae from first voyage 1995
Makaliʻi returns from first voyage recorded at Kawaihae in 1995. Makaliʻi is the third waʻa (voyaging canoe) after Hōkūleʻa and Hawaiʻiloa and built under the leadership of Clay and Shorty Bertelmann. Other builders include Billy Richards, Chadd ʻŌnohi Paishon, and Pomai Bertelmann. The first voyage took Makaliʻi to Taputapuatea, Raʻiatea in Tahiti Nui and Nukuhiva, Marquesas Islands. Footage includes aerials of the canoe in the ocean; ceremonies in honor of Makaliʻi including oli (chanting), hula, haʻa, and speeches; and interviews with Richards, Paishon, and Bertelmann.
