Interview with Hokulani Holt-Padilla 3/24/2006 tape 1

Interview with Hokulani Holt-Padilla, the cultural program director of the Maui Arts and Cultural Center recorded on March 24, 2006 for the documentary "Lahaina: Waves of Change." Holt-Padilla explains that Lāhainā is not only a place for visitors but a sacred place where generations of aliʻi lived, raised their children, and still remain. Holt-Padilla shares the sacredness of Lāhainā including Mokuhinia pond, which surrounds Mokuʻula island, where the home of aliʻi once was. Holt-Padilla also describes the transformation of Lāhainā by the cash economy and how while the Hawaiian culture remained in Lāhainā, the Hawaiian lifestyle changed forever. The Hawaiian lifestyle she talks about is the lifestyle of living with the environment and the lifestyle of concern for each other.
