The 1989 Smithsonian Festival of American Folklife. Festival held between June 23-27 and June 30-July 4. Hālau Nā Hula ʻO Laʻi Kealoha under the direction of Kumu Elaine Kaopuiki perform hula kahiko and hula 'auana for Hawaiʻi program during festival. The band includes Haunani Apoliona, Ledward Kaʻapana, Solomon Hoʻopiʻi, Richard Hoʻopiʻi, Violet Pahu Lilikoʻi, and Kumu Kaopuiki. Hula kahiko performance includes the mele "Eō Mai o Kaunoʻa [Kaunaʻoa]," "A Nanai Kaulahea," and a mele for Maunalei. Hula ʻauana performance include the mele "Piha Hauʻoli," "Manaʻo Pili," "Sanoe," and more.
