Interview with Ah Quon McElrath, contemporary of Koji Ariyoshi in Hawaiʻi's organized labor movement, recorded on July 14, 2004 for the documentary Biography Hawaiʻi: Koji Ariyoshi. Topics include: McElrath's introduction to Ariyoshi, the impact that growing up on a Kona coffee plantation had on Ariyoshi, the racial dynamics of Hawaiʻi in the 1920s and 1930s, Ariyoshi's educational background and its importance in his developing view of the world, the beginnings of the organized labor movement in Hawaiʻi, the local media sources through which Hawaiʻi workers could find out about world events and the global labor movement, and the origins and impact of the "Honolulu Record" newspaper under Ariyoshi's editorship.
