Interview with Kahu David Kawika Kaʻalakea [6/15/1990] Fred Meinecke [7/14/1990]

Interview with Kahu David Kawika Kaʻalakea [recorded on June 15, 1990] and Fred Kalani Meinecke [recorded on July 14, 1990] for the documentary "Luther Kahekili Makekau: A One Kine Hawaiian Man." In Hawaiian, Kaʻalakea tells of the time he and Luther Makekau lived in Kīpahulu and worked as cowboys at ʻUlupalakua Ranch. Kaʻalakea shares how Makekau loved horses and tamed the horses by rubbing their foreheads. Includes scenic shots of a pasture in Hāna, Maui; ʻĀlau island, a little island off of Koki beach located south of Hāna; and ocean view of Kaʻuiki Hill and Hāna Bay from uka (inland). Meinecke sits with Eddie Kamae fronting the ocean with lei and a bottle of cream sherry wine, Makekau's favorite drink. They celebrate what would have been Makekau's 100th birthday and talk about a song they wrote with Kahu Kaʻalakea for Luther.
