Interview with George Naope recorded on April 21, 1996 at his home on Hawaiʻi Island for the documentary "Keepers of the Flame: The Cultural Legacy of Three Hawaiian Women." Naope talks about both Edith Kanakaʻole and ʻIolani Luahine. Naope shares stories of being neighbors with Kanakaʻole and being a student of her mother, Aunty Mary, learning hula (dance); words of wisdom learned from Aunty Mary; Naope, Kanakaʻole and Luahine traveling together to Molokaʻi and the police looking for them; the Queen of Tonga's visit to Hawaiʻi Island; and Luahine sharing a lei hala, a neck garland made with the fruit of the hala (pandanus) tree, as a hoʻokupu (offering).
