Liʻa : The Legacy of a Hawaiian Man

Premiered in 1988, this documentary by Eddie & Myrna Kamae celebrates the music and spirit of revered Big Island performer and composer Sam Liʻa Kalainaina (1881-1975). It is also about a place, Waipiʻo Valley, and a life shaped and nourished by that place. The documentary is narrated by Kaʻupena Wong and written by James D. Houston. Purdy; Eddie Thomas; John and Ginger Auna; Ruth Kaholoaʻa; Claybourne "Braddah Smitty" Smith and Clyde "Kindy" Sproat; Paul and Leimomi Agrabante; Andy Batalona; Herb Kane; Chris Leialoha and Uka-G Ohana; Abraham and Ida Maa; Charles Mahi; Viewed "Tiny" Malaikini; Harry Nihau Sr.; John Nihau; John Holi Mae; and Norman Wassman. Featuring musicians Eddie Kamae and The Sons of Hawaiʻi; Reverend Dennis Kamakahi; George Kuo; Joe Marshall; Claybourne "Braddah Smitty" Smith; Junior Daugherty; Karin Haleamau; Clyde "Kindy" Sproat; and The Royal Hawaiian Band with Bandmaster Aaron Mahi. Hula by Hālau O Ka Ua Kani Lehua under the direction of Kumu Johnny Lum Ho. This documentary won a Special Recognition Award for the best documentary in the first ten years of the Hawaiʻi International Film Festival.
