Highlights from the 28th Annual Merrie Monarch Festival; includes hula kahiko and ʻauana from wāhine and kāne. Includes interview with Kalena Silva who selected the mandatory oli (chant) which was written for Mt. Kaʻala and King Kalākaua. This reel highlights winners for kahiko, ʻauana, Miss Aloha Hula and the hālau who won overall with the most points. The winners for hula kahiko in the wāhine division were as follows: fourth place Hālau Hula Olana under the direction of Kumu Olana and Howard Ai, third place Hālau ʻO Nā Maoli Pua under the direction of Kumu Alicia Smith, second place Keolalaulani Hālau ʻŌlapa O Laka under the direction of Kumu Aloha Dalire, and Hula Hālau ʻO Kamuela under the direction of Kumu Paleka Mattos and Edward Mook placing first. The winners for hula kahiko in the kāne division were as follows: third place Nā Wai Ehā ʻO Puna under the direction of Kumu Thaddius Wilson and O'brien Eselu, second place Hālau ʻO Ka Ua Kani Lehua under the direction of Kumu Johnny Lum Ho, and Hula Hālau ʻO Kahikilaulani under the direction of Kumu Ray Fonseca placing first. Includes highlights of the winners from the Miss Aloha Hula competition: Michele Kuʻuleimamo Mata Hui Hoʻoulu Aloha third runner up for hula kahiko, second runner up for hula kahiko Rhona Elizabeth Kuʻukamalani Ho with Kealiʻikaʻapunihonua Keʻena Aʻo Hula, first place oli division Pikake Leimomi Wilson Hula Hālau ʻO Kahikilaulani, fourth runner up for hula ʻauana Puamelia Quisano Hula Hālau ʻO Kamuela, first runner up for hula ʻauana Darlene Uʻilani Akiona for Hālau Hula Olana, and the winner of Miss Aloha Hula Kapualokeokalaniākea Dalire for Keolalaulani Hālau ʻŌlapa O Laka under the direction of Kumu Aloha Dalire. The winners for the hula ʻauana wāhine division were: fourth place Hālau Mōhala ʻIlima under the direction of Kumu Māpuana de Silva, tied for second place Keolalaulani Hālau ʻŌlapa O Laka under the direction of Kumu Aloha Dalire and Hālau ʻO Nā Maoli Pua under the direction of Kumu Alicia Smith, and first place Hula Hālau Nā Lei ʻO Kaholoku under the direction of Kumu Nani Yim Lap and Leialoha Amina. The winner for the hula ʻauna kāne division Hālau Hula ʻO Ka Ua Kilihune under the direction of Kumu Al Makahinu Barcarse, second place Nā Wai Ehā ʻO Puna under the direction of Kumu Thaddius Wilson and O'Brien Eselu, and first place Hālau ʻO Ka Ua Kani Lehua under the direction of Kumu Johnny Lum Ho. Winning overall was Hula Hālau ʻO Kamuela under the direction of Kumu Paleka Mattos and Edward Mook.
