Sheldeen Haleamau performs Puʻuonioni 8/21/93

Recorded on August 21, 1993 while smoke billows in the background from lava entering the ocean, Sheldeen Haleamau performs "Puʻuonioni" an ancient chant done as a hula noho (hula performed in a sitting position) with ʻiliʻili (small stones used in dances). This chant is written for Pele and refers to her as Wahine Kapu. The chant also mentions Malama a land section with a sea area and crater at Kalapana in the district of Puna on the island of Hawaiʻi (https://www.huapala.org/Chants/Puuonioni.html).
