Ukumehame and sugarcane fields 12/6/1999

Continued from title 27221, scenic footage and interview with John Kaaea recorded in Ukumehame on December 6, 1999 for the documentary "Lahaina: Waves of Change." Scenic footage includes the mountain range at Ukumehame including the eagle on the side of the mountain; loʻi (taro patch); and empty fields that once grew taro then sugarcane. In the interview Kaaea talks about the difference between day work and contract work with the Olowalu Sugar Company. He also discusses his birthplace where his father grew taro and eventually had to change crops due to water restrictions by the sugar company.
