Listen to the Forest

Premiered in 1991, Listen to the Forest is an environmental documentary by Eddie & Myrna Kamae that speaks to the widespread concern for rainforest preservation. It is about the Hawaiian Islands, and about a Hawaiian way of feeling. A film for all ages emphasizing the powerful connection between a unique natural history and Hawaiʻi's rich cultural life. The documentary is narrated by Kaʻupena Wong and written by James D. Houston. Interviews include Dr. Beatrice "Bea" Krauss; William "Bill" Mull; David Boynton; Kahuna Lāʻau Lapaʻau Henry Auwae [Papa Henry]; Rubellite Johnson; Dr. Michael Hadfield; Dr. Steven Lee Montgomery; Pualani Kanakaʻole Kanahele; Malia Craver; Hirini Melbourne; Richard Nunns; Kawehi Ryder; Kahu David Kaʻalakea; Ruth Kaholoaʻa; William Kuwalu; Joseph Kuwalu Kaili; Reverend Roy Toko; Nā Kamaliʻi O ʻAiea; and Nā Kamaliʻi O Kokeʻe. Special appearances by Hawaiian Happy Face Spiders, Hawaiian Tree Snails, and Native Hawaiian Birds. Chanters Pualani Kanakaʻole Kanahele and Kaʻupena Wong, who was the narrator for seven of the Kamae's documentaries. Hula by Hālau o Ka Ua Kani Lehua under the direction of Kumu Hula Johnny Lum Ho and Hālau O Kekuhi under the direction of Pualani Kanakaʻole Kanahele and Nālani Kanakaʻole. Music by Eddie Kamae and The Sons of Hawaiʻi, Dennis Kamakahi, George Kuo, Joe Marshall, and Claybourne "Braddah Smitty" Smith. Kī hōʻalu (slack key guitar) by George Kuo and Ledward Kaʻapana.
